introductions

In reading this blog you can learn a little about me, but what about you? What is your "recommended reading?" Where have your travels led you this summer...to China, Sudbury Farm, Crane's beach? How did you unwind? In class this year, I hope we are able to explore ideas, experiment with learning, and have some fun. What are your hopes for English class this year?

Ms. Miller- Honors
Page 294
“No doubt he was laughing at me. I must have looked silly hurtling across the roofs, and like a black-face comedian shrinking from a ghost when the white pigeons shot up around me. To hell with him. He needn’t be so smug, I knew of something’s he didn’t know. Let him find someone else. He only wanted to use me for something”
I chose this passage from the classic novel Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, because it was one that stuck into my head because its descriptive wording painted a picture in my head. In this excerpt the main character was describing a situation in which a white man he noticed was looking down on him. As an African-American living in this time period (the 195o’s) it’s safe to assume that this wasn’t the first time, however this one time, noticing someone looking down on him, hits him as if it hasn’t happened before. He compares himself to a black- faced comedian (who were popular back the) as if, to the man he notices, he is lesser than himself. He is clearly bothered by this as shown through him exclaim “to hell with him.” Ralph Ellison did a great job describing how the main character felt, especially using the imagery of a black-faced comedian” shrinking from a “ghost.” The themes of inequality are apparent in this passage simply because the situation of a man looking down on the other because of his race. This theme is constantly shown throughout the book including my next passage, which is the narrator explaining how he feels in this world.
Page 4
“I am man of substance, of flesh and bone, fiber and liquids- and I might even be said to posses a mind. I am invisible understand simply people refuse to see me. Like bodiless heads you see sometimes in circus slideshows…”
Inequality reigned in America in the 1950’s as explained in the passage above. Here there is a man who considers himself “invisible” because people refuse to recognize him for what he truly is, as explained by the author. This is a good example of descriptive writing, for after reading this passage one can one can imagine themselves in the position that the narrator finds himself in.
